DSLR Sensor Cleaning: What It Is, Why It Matters, and When to Call a Professional

Ask any working photographer about sensor dust and you’ll likely get a knowing grimace. It’s one of those inevitabilities — change lenses often enough in real-world conditions and eventually, particles find their way onto your camera’s imaging sensor. The result is those familiar dark spots that appear in the same location across image after image, often most visible against plain skies, white backgrounds, or smooth out-of-focus areas. At PJ Camera Repairs, sensor cleaning is one of our most requested services, and understanding the process can help you make a more informed decision about when to tackle it yourself and when to hand it over to a professional.

First, a quick bit of context: in a DSLR, the sensor itself is protected by a thin glass filter — sometimes incorporating anti-aliasing and infrared-cut properties — that sits in front of the actual imaging chip. Dust particles cling to this filter’s surface, and because they sit so close to the sensor plane, they cast a sharp shadow onto the final image. Mirrorless cameras are arguably even more susceptible, since the sensor is directly exposed every time you change a lens with no mirror box acting as a partial buffer.

There are different tiers of sensor cleaning, starting with the most gentle. Many cameras have a built-in sensor shake function that vibrates the filter to dislodge loose particles. This is a good first resort and won’t cause any harm. The next step up is air blowing — using a proper rocket blower (never a can of compressed air, which can deposit propellant residue) to dislodge stubborn particles. These methods work for light contamination but have their limits.

When visible spots persist, wet cleaning is required — a specialised sensor swab moistened with a measured amount of cleaning fluid is drawn across the sensor filter in a single, controlled stroke. Done correctly, this removes oils, stubborn dust, and smears cleanly and safely. Done incorrectly, it can scratch the coating, introduce more debris, or leave streaks that are worse than the original problem. It requires the right tools, the right technique, and experience working with sensors of varying sizes and sensitivities.

This is exactly why many photographers — even experienced ones — choose to have their sensors cleaned professionally. The cost is modest, the turnaround is quick, and you have the peace of mind of knowing it’s been done right. At PJ Camera Repairs, we offer professional DSLR sensor cleaning as a standalone service, and our technicians work with all major camera brands. We’ll also inspect the sensor area for any other issues while we’re in there, so you get a thorough check as part of the service.

If you’re noticing persistent spots in your images, don’t wait until they’re ruining important shots. Fill in our repair enquiry form for a free estimate, post your camera to us in Newcastle Under Lyme, and we’ll have it back to you shooting clean. It’s that straightforward.
